[Quick Bite] Calgary: Yamato Dessert Cafe
February 6, 2013

I love Yamato’s. I love its delicious delicious desserts. It’s just a shame that it is so far away and inconvenient! Well, maybe not a shame, because if it was closer, I’d be 300 pounds…

I got the traditional Japanese cheesecake:

IMG_2212

Cheeesssseeecakkkkeeee

Japanese cheesecake is more cake-like than western cheesecake. They have this cotton-y, billow-y soft texture, and a really mild cheese taste.

The bf got a fresh fruit flan. Which I don’t understand why you would do such a thing when there’s cheesecake to be had…

IMG_2211

I love that there’s mango on here, yum

I think he convinced himself that this was kind of, sort of healthy, you know because of the fruits. He pretty much demolished this thing in two bites. So I guess it was pretty delicious.

[Quick Bite] Seattle: Piroshky, Piroshky
August 29, 2012

When in Seattle, GO TO Piroshky, Piroshky. Seriously, do it. If you only have one baked good while you’re in Seattle, make sure it’s from this cute little Russian bakery.

Adorably Rustic Signage

Ermahgerd…can I get one of each please?

Seriously: One. Each.

No? Whhhhhhyyyyy?

At the end, we decided to get one savoury and one sweet pastry.

It’s even in the shape of a fish! Sort of…

We got the smoked salmon pate meat piroshky:

So. Good.

Delicious, I probably could’ve eaten 8 of these. I loved the soft and mushy texture of the pate in between the layers of the crispy pastry dough.

But, dude. If you only get one thing, get this:

Whole Baked Apple

As creative as the name is, you know what you’re getting. You’re getting a WHOLE. BAKED. APPLE.

Oh Lawd.

Tender apples, sweet cream cheese, crispy pastry crust, and powdered sugar:

Could there be anything better? That’s a no, rhetorical question.

This baby is definitely delicious but it is also very rich. I would recommend sharing it, but hell, eat a whole one by yourself, no one will judge you.

[Quick Bite] Seattle: Jean Claude’s Belle Pastry
August 29, 2012

When in Seattle, do not go to Jean Claude’s Belle Pastry. Well, at least don’t go there for meringues.

Fresh-made my ass

I, for some odd reason, have this odd obsession with meringues. But…I think I’ve gotten over it now. I always want to get this pastry whenever I see it, and have been, more often than not, been disappointed by it. It’s a whipped egg whites and sugar pastry that is most often associated with either the Swiss or the French.

Stale.

Also Stale.

I swear these were 10-day old meringues, I could instantly taste it from the first bite. Incremental bites did not make it any better. I’m pretty sure we threw both of these out after a couple of bites. Gross. Disgusting. Disappointing. Waste of money.

[Quick Bite] Calgary: Sidewalk Citizen Bakery
August 30, 2011

We went hunting around the industrial area for some baked goods at Sidewalk Citizen Bakery. Of course, it’s after my excursion that they rolled out their Stephen Avenue cart. Stephen Ave is much more convenient than their 5524 1A Street location. Oh woe is me.

Oh well, I got some yummy baked goods out of it, and plus, it was a nice day, so really nothing to complain about.

I really wanted some of their mojito scones after Aviv Fried tweeted about it the other week, but they didn’t have any the day I went~ 😦

Some cheese scone the bf got

There were lots of treats with Saskatoon berries and mascarpone cheese:

Delicious

Yum!

I love this type of pastry!

The yummy pastries are definitely worth the walk, but if you’re lazy (like me), their bread cart is up and running on Stephen every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:45am until 9:30am. They also have bread delivery on Tuesdays if you’re downtown!!

[Quick Bites] Calgary: Jelly Modern Doughnuts (2 & 3)
July 29, 2011

More doughnuts from Jelly Modern. Their changing weekend specials are going to make me fat. Some of them sound so good that I just have to go get it!

Super Duper Cute Bio-degradable Cutlery!!

I love their packaging:

Too cute!

I don’t remember what this one was…I think it was the valrhona chocolate double chocolate? But it looks different than the photo they have on their website… -____-”

Bf's

The bf also got a chocolate espresso:

❤ Chocolate Curls

This was what dragged me to Jelly Modern. Strawberry Shortcake doughnut:

Yum

Their cake doughnut actually tastes like a cake:

Deeelicious~

This is another day, I heard about their picnic boxes and wanted to try them out. At first I thought it was $9.95 for 2 3-Bite-Sandwiches, 2 3-Bite Doughnuts, 2 chips, and 2 Jelly made Strawberry Lemonade, and thought, man, that’s an awesome deal! But alas, no such deal, I totally misread and it only comes with 2 sandwiches, and then 1 of everything else. 😦

It’s still an ok deal, but you know, once you thought something is one price, it’s hard to think that anything more expensive is a good deal. You know what I mean?

3-Bite-Sandwiches

We got one Ham & Brie and one Chicken Salad. They were actually really good. I really enjoyed the unglazed doughnuts as buns. Again, it’s that play with sweet & savory that I love so much, and the texture of the doughnut really complements the sandwich I think.

Mini doughnuts that we got with our “combo”:

Babies

Strawberry Fields Forever! I had to try this one!!

Cute curls again~

And, of course, we had to try Mayor Nenshi’s Salted Caramel Doughnut:

Soooo good!!

This was our favourite out of the two!! It could’ve used more salt though~

Also the Jelly made Strawberry Lemonade we got was super concentrated. Maybe the employee forgot to dilute it with water or something…

[Quick Bites] Calgary: Jelly Modern Doughnuts
May 20, 2011

I heard about this new contemporary bakery over on Twitter a couple of weeks ago and I made a mental note to go visit as soon as possible. Two weeks later, it was my mom’s birthday, which made it the perfect time to go! Mommy dearest loves doughnuts, and I thought it’d be a cute alternative to a birthday cake~

Sooo, on Sunday I drove around trying to find it, but I couldn’t spot it in my car, so I parked and decided to hunt for it on foot. I have no idea why I didn’t see the store front – it’s bright pink -____-“, major fail. I got there at around 9 AM, so everything was super fresh, and there were new batches coming out of the kitchen as I hummed and hawed, trying to decide what flavours I wanted to try.

Cute box~

I decided to get mostly mini ones ($1.95) instead of the regular size ones ($2.25). Even though there’s only $0.30 difference, I wanted to get a lot of flavours and didn’t want to look like a little piggy. I did end u getting one regular sized one though, and that was the weekend chef creation, Key Lime!

Key Lime!! I looove citrus flavoured foods~

The Key Lime was very good, it had a perfect balance of tart and sweet. Also, I’m a sucker for anything involving citrus, so thumbs up in my book.

I got 6 other doughnuts; 3 for the bf and I to try at home, and 3 to bring to my mom, aunt & grandma later that afternoon.

After endlessly looking at the menu on their website over the course of 2 weeks, I already knew we had to try the Maple Bacon:

om nom nom nom bacooon

This was…just a tad disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, it was very good, but I wanted more of a bacon flavour. The bacon itself was very mild, almost no flavour, the only bacon-like attribute it had was that it was chewy. I wanted more of a contrast of the sweetness of the maple, and the salty smokiness of the bacon. Salty + Sweet = Winning. So, I liked it, but it had a very strong maple flavour, almost tooo sweet. I wouldn’t get this again I don’t think, it was almost a gimmicky flavour to get people in, but really doesn’t reach its potential for deliciousness.

Next up:

MARSHMALLOW!!

Mmmm…I love me some marshmallow. After the lack of marshmallow at Chokat, I knew I had to get this to make up for my lack of marshmallow intake. I love love loved this one!

The bf picked the Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla. I didn’t really like this one, first of all, I’m not a big fan of sprinkles, and second of it, it just tasted like a normal doughnut, no fun at all (sad face).

Sprinklesss~ So glad it didn't cover the whole doughnut

That was the last one I got to taste, the rest I give to my mom. They were too full to try them after our brunch at Sunterra, so they took it home to eat

Co-co-nut

Boy, they sure are pretty though.

Peanut Butter Cup

S'mores

I’d like to point out that these are top-notch doughnuts. I usually don’t eat doughnuts because every time I’d have even one bite of Tim Horton‘s doughnuts, the roof of my mouth would start peeling. As we Chinese like to call it, doughnuts are a 熱氣食物, “hot foods” if you will. I’m not sure what it is with Timmy’s doughnuts, but I just can’t have them without feeling like poo after. But Jelly Modern doughnuts did no such thing to the roof of my mouth, AND I had 1-1/2 of them! The dough is absolutely scrumptious~!

That just means I can go back and get more now!!

Oh – also, I would like to state how happy I am that different type of dessert places are popping up in Calgary. When I saw Crepe Avenue pop up in Kensington I was worried that crepes might be the new “it” dessert, but I’m just glad that crepes aren’t the new cupcakes. Crepes are borrrrinnngggg~

[Quick Bite] Calgary: Brûlée Patisserie
April 28, 2011

Brûlée is probably my favoriate Bakery in Calgary. It’s a basement level store like Bliss, but the atmosphere and the decor is very nice and it has a rustic feel to it. There’s also some tables inside if you want to enjoy your treats right away!!

This trip to Brûlée I got a raspberry (Saskatoon berry maybe?) crumble:

Cute packaging~

Yumm

I wish I would’ve heated it up before I ate it though. Again, no microwave, and I was too lazy to turn the oven on for such a tiny treat~

Even though it wasn’t heated, it was still delicious!!

[Quick Bite] Calgary: Cookie Mama Inc.
April 25, 2011

Mmmm…I love long weekends! It gives me a good excuse to stuff my face with lots of goodies! One of the stop the bf and I hit was Cookie Mama in Inglewood. We also got some treats at Choklat (post later), and we were going to have lunch at Spolumbo’s but they weren’t open – so we tried out the new poutinerie on 17th (again – post later).

Cookie Mama is great because they offer gluten-free options! I’m not Celiac or anything, but I’m trying to limit my intake of wheat and gluten, sooooo thumbs up for me!

I got the ‘Fame’ cookie, which was gluten-free and had caramel & chocolate in it…I think. I thought they would have a list of their cookies up on their website, so I didn’t bother remembering what was in it, but it turns out that the one I got isn’t listed… -____-” (major fail).

FAME...I'm gonna to live forever...I'm gonna learn how to fly...

The size of this particular cookie was quite big, but their cookies aren’t uniformed (ah, homemade goodness), so I lucked out! Mmm…this cookies was super good, I wish I could’ve had more. I was trying to be reasonable though, since I was hitting up a chocolate store and a poutinerie after…

The bf got the ‘La Vida Mocha‘ cookie – it’s a dark chocolate cookie with cranberries, toasted almonds and a hint of coffee.

Bahahaha, my cookie was bigger WIN!

The bf really liked his, he said that you could really taste the fruity flavour of the cranberry through all the chocolate goodness.

[Quick Bite] Calgary: Yann Haute Patisserie
March 20, 2011

Yann Haute Patisserie celebrates Free Macaron Day by giving out free macarons! This is great because:

a) I’m asian = I love free stuff, and
b) I’ve been wanting to try Yann Haute’s yummy baked goods for a while now.

Sooo…awesome!

I was debating between getting the Rose/Lychee (spelled Lychi at Yann Haute = don’t like) or the Earl Grey flavour. I ultimately decided on the:

Rose/Lychee

It tasted really florally – which is to be expected. The lychee also gave it a really perfume-y taste, but it wasn’t bad. I think I’m going to have to go back and try the Earl Grey one next time, in hindsight, I probably should have tried that first because I love love love tea~

The bf had the Banana Avocado flavour, I think it was the special of the day. I had a teeny bite, and didn’t like it. I think anything flavoured like bananas taste like the syrupy medicine we probably all used to get as kids. I really don’t like that, so it’s pretty safe to say that I won’t like anything fake banana flavoured.

We also both got two treats each, but I didn’t get to take a picture of them. The bf shoved his in his mouth so fast I almost didn’t get to try any of his. He got some sort of Coconut/Chocolate Croissant & an Apple Brioche of some sort. And I was eating my pastries throughout the day as my lunch while we grocery shopped, so I didn’t think to take pictures. I got a plain Butter Croissant (yum!) and a Pear & Chocolate Brioche. Both were really good, we’re going to have to go back soon so I can take pictures!

[Quick Bite] Calgary: Starbucks
March 12, 2011

Starbucks is giving away free Starbucks Petites on March 10th – 12th between 2 and 5 p.m. to celebrate their 40th anniversary (Tribute Days). Now I really like Starbucks from their drinks, and that’s what they should stick to. Their pastries kind of suck though. I remember like 2 years ago I had a cheese bun there, and it tasted so bad that I vowed to never have any pastry-like food at Starbucks again.

But hey, these were free! On Friday I got the Red Velvet Whoopie Pie:

Decent

This was okay…it was nothing special.

Now on Saturday I got the Tiramisu Cake Pop…and..this was baaaddd. The cake on the instead was really moist (not in a good way), like wet-moist, kind of felt like I was eating wet mush.

Also, a bone to pick with Starbucks: WHY DID YOU CHANGE YOUR COMPUTER SYSTEM?! I usually get a Tea Latte without the syrup, and Starbucks used to charge me for a Whole-Leaf Tea and an additional $0.50 for the steamed milk. This was great, I felt like I was getting my money’s worth! Now, they say they’re not allowed to do that, and I get charged for a full Tea Latte even though I don’t want their stinkin’ syrup. They should at least minus $0.50 from the price. I know this makes me sound cheap…but I like to drink a lot of Starbucks, and it adds up!! whine, whine, complain, complain…I know~
