[Dine-Out] Calgary: Bonterra Trattoria {Big Taste 2013}
March 8, 2013

In an attempt to not be a horrible blogger, here’s another post on Big Taste 2013!

I would like to preface my next sentence with the following statement: I usually don’t like Italian food, I don’t know why, I just never feel like Italian food.

I. ADORE. BONTERRA. Pretty much, it’s the only Italian restaurant that I have voluntarily gone to for the last 2 years. The food here is delicious, the atmosphere is homey and welcoming, the portions are huge, and they have an amazing patio (when the weather is nice, of course).

Go here for the Big Taste. Their $15 lunch menu is amazing. Case and point:

sdfsdf

Agnello e Cinghiale

The Big Taste menu’s 1st course is Agnello e Cinghiale, which literally means lamb and wild boar. It’s a gorgeous little plate of pâté (of lamb and boar) topped with micro greens, blood orange, pistachio, and sea salt.

I didn’t want to have 2 plates of the same thing, so I ordered à la carte and got the ricotta from the antipasti section as a starter.

dsfdsf

$11

Holy moly. This was a huge plate of ricotta. Of delicious ricotta – so not complaining. But man, I was pretty stuffed by the time I made my way through this plate. I even shared.

Locally made ricotta cheese. Cherries. Sea salt. Crostini. Lovely. Make sure that you ration the cherries though, the rich and creamy ricotta taste infinity more delicious when eaten with the sweet yet tart cherries.

dfsdf

Big Taste Main – Tagliatelle Bolognese

Tagliatelle Bolognese – a delicious portion of beef, veal, wild boar, shiitake mushroom, sweet pea, and grana padano.

dsfd

Half size – $12

I got the half portion of spaghetti alla puttanesca. It comes with side stripe shrimp, bay scallop, tomato, black olive, squid, anchovy, and basil. This sounded scrumptious on the menu because of all the seafood BUUUTTT the first bite that I took must have had a lot of black olive in it annd I made the bf switch me dishes. I don’t like the taste of olives, but I thought I could handle it because of all the delicious seafood. Apparently that was just my bite though because the bf said that it wasn’t as olive-y as I made it out to be.

You can see from the picture below the difference between the half portion and the full portion. It’s pretty much exactly a half portion.

dsfd

Pasta Galore!

And for the big taste dessert - Cioccolato del Scoppio:

sdfdsf

Pretty much a cake pop

dsfd

Moist chocolatey cake innards

The dessert was okay, but as I might have mentioned before – I don’t really like chocolate. It was a double chocolate Nutella cake pop – the Nutella made the cake super moist though. The candy pearls were a nice touch.

Fact: I have a reservation for the Big Taste dinner at Bonterra this weekend.

You should get one too.

[Dine-Out] Calgary: Manuel Latruwe Belgian Patisserie & Bread Shop
February 18, 2013

First thing first: I NEED to go back and have some of the baked goodies. I can’t believe I didn’t order any when I was there…what was I thinking?

Ok, on to lunch:

What could be hiding under all the greens?!

I got the ham and spinach quiche with a side of fresh garden salad.

Small Quiche $11.50

I don’t think I like quiches. The foamy eggy texture just doesn’t do it for me. Not that this one was bad or anything, I just don’t think I enjoy consuming quiches…

The bf got a baguette sandwich, which, by the way, is a way better deal than the quiche.

Baguette Sandwich $7.62

He got the Sourdough Baguette, which comes with Calabrese salami, aged Gruyere cheese, tomato confit, and black olives. Pretty decent sized sandwich for eight bucks, also, fresh baked bread!

Lovely salads though.

[Dine-Out] Canmore: Mountain Mercato
February 16, 2013

Mountain Mercato is probably one of the best places in Canmore to grab a quick bite to eat. There are lots of pubs and more expensive restaurants in Calgary, so MM is a nice option for someone that doesn’t want greasy pub food but also don’t want to fork out an arm and a leg.

For my main, I got a large portion of its feature soup for $7.25:

Crazy big portions!

This was such a HUGE bowl of soup. It was some sort of chunky chicken and tomato soup.  I love me some tomato soup, but I definitely could not finish this. The bowl was probably the size of my head (and I have a huge head). Next time, I would definitely get the small portion…

The bf got the Italiano panini for $10:

Who doesn’t love a panini?

The Italiano comes stuffed with salumi, provolone, and balsamic peppers. Bf said it was delicious.

We also got an aperitivo to share:

Salumi and Olives $11

This was such a great portion for the price. I wish there was somewhere to get quality meat boards for this price in Calgary…

Can’t quite recall what all the meats were, but there is some housemade pate and a variety of salumi in there…just some yummy cured meats is all you need to know!

Mmm…this makes me want to go back to Canmore. Maybe a weekend hike is in order.

[Quick Bite] Calgary: Mighty Skillet
February 13, 2013

Seriously, best breakfast sandwich of my life:

Kingpin $7

Colossus $7

If I would not get fat, I would pay $7 to eat this everyday of my life. Tomato + onion + cheddar omelette and 2 bacon slices in between french toast with MAPLE SYRUP.

As I was eating this, hot, gooey syrup was running down my arm. Seriously did not care. I’m pretty sure I got some burns from it. Sooooo good.

Salty + sweet = deliciousness.

[Dine-Out] Calgary: Añejo
December 21, 2012

So, I’d like to start off by saying that…I don’t like Mexican food. Well, that is, I thought I didn’t like Mexican food. I’ve always been forced to go to places like Julio’s for “Mexican” food but its menu is just full of overpriced fajitas and deep fried platters. Yuck.

BUT. I. LOVE. AÑEJO.

The food there is so fresh and so frigging delicious. I would eat here all the time.

We ordered the guacamole to share. Made table side. Love. Añejo’s guacamole is made with avocado, serrano, jalapeño, onion, tomato, lime, and sea salt.

Delicious Pile of Green Goodness

IMG_2293

Tortilla Chips

I found the guacamole just a tad bit acidic. Maybe too much lime juice.

We also ordered six tacos to share.

IMG_2296

TACOS

We got two beef short rib, two adobo pork, and two crispy red snapper. All the tacos are filled with picked cabbage, cilantro, red onion, avocado, and fresh jalapeño.

fdafd

Beef

dsfdf

Snapper

The snapper was my favourite with the beef a close second. The beef had a nice spice to it and I really liked the texture. The pork was waaaay not on the list. It was just kind of plain tasting, I would definitely not order the pork again next time. Man, three tacos and guacamole = way too much food for me. It doesn’t look like a lot of food but boy, does it ever fill you up.

sfdfd

Tres Salsas

Top left is the pico de gallo, top right is the salsa picasa (spiciest salsa ever), and the green one is salsa verde. All delicious but I especially love the salsa picasa and its spiciness. Lather it in your taco with caution!

[Dine-Out] Seattle: Pike Place Chowder
August 28, 2012

When in Seattle – eat chowder.

The Pike Place Chowder

Pike Place Chowder was definitely top on my list of places to eat. We hit this spot on the very first day of our week long vacation.

The market chowder of the day was Crab and Shrimp:

<3 Chalkboard Menu

We ordered the dungeness crab roll and the 4 cup chowder sampler to share:

Om Nom Nom

The 4 we got to try were the seafood bisque, smoked salmon, New England clam chowder and the market chowder.

Least favourite = smoked salmon

The chowders were everything they were promised to be – rich, creamy, delicious. If there had to be one that didn’t live up to expectations, it was the smoked salmon. It just wasn’t as delicious as all the other ones, it was evident by the fact that it was the last one left AND it was still half full. It had nova smoked salmon, capers, and cream cheese – it was still good but left us thinking “we should have tried something else”. The seafood bisque was my favourite. It had so much seafood – Pacific cod, Northwest salmon, Oregon bay shrimp, and crab all simmered in a creamy, tomato-ey broth. Runner up was definitely the classic New England. Nothing beats a creamy bowl of bacon and clam soup!

Annnd, the glorious Dungeness Crab Roll:

Ermahgerd, one was not enough.

Next time, we would definitely order two of these babies. The crab meat was unbelievably fresh, and the amount of mayo was just perfect. I hate salads with too much mayo, yuck. Is it still called a salad if it comes in a bun? It is right? And the celery added a nice crunch which definitely broke up the mushy texture of the crab and the white bun. Thumbs up all the way.

[Dine-Out] Calgary: Ox & Angela (Big Taste 2012)
August 23, 2012

Ok…I’m pretty sure this is the last of my Big Taste posts. A Big Taste lunch @ Ox & Angela. I absolutely adore this restaurant, I’ve been to a dinner with a group of friends here once. The food was to die for. Big Taste 2012 marked the first time that Ox & Angela was offering a lunch menu.

The meal started off to a great start, bread, olive oil, and two delicious type of salts.

Olive Oil + Bread = Addictive

I take back what I said in my last post, this is the best. salad. ever. Look at all that glorious cheese:

Om nom nom nom

This simple salad consisted only of 3 ingredients: frisee, cabrales, and toasted walnuts. I never thought something so simple would be so good. It was dressed with the perfect amount of sherry vinegar, not too saucy at all.

The bf got the soup:

Anything with a poached egg = thumbs up

The soup was good too, but personally I liked my salad more. The bf definitely liked his soup more though. It’s a garbanzo beans, spinach, and a perfectly cooked poached egg. When you break the egg, the creamy goodness of the yolk just makes the soup that much better.

For the main course, the bf got the Bocadillio:

A Super Fancy Grilled Cheese

A traditional bocadillio isn’t made with sliced bread, so this is pretty much a just an awesome grilled sandwich with chorizo, arugula, dried tomato, aioli, and manchego cheese. I love the presentation, very rustic! The bf loved his sandwich, the only complaint was = not enough meat.

I got the trout:

I <3 Fish

The perfectly seared trout (look at how crispy that skin looks) came with another fresh, refreshing salad. The citrus and fried capers were a wonderful addition in terms of taste AND texture.

The main course came with patatas bravas for the table:

Delicious Fried Potatoes Covered in a Smoked Paprika Ketchup

I can eat a entire pot of these.

The dessert was Tarta Santiago:

Cake of Saint James

This is a traditional Spanish cake made with ground almonds, eggs, and sugar. This particular one had a hint of orange in it and was dusted with powdered sugar. This was okay, I personally don’t like almond flavours or orange flavours….so…Tarta Santiago is not my thing.

[Dine-Out] Calgary: The Libertine Public House
July 26, 2012

Went and sat at The Libertine’s patio the other day. I absolutely adore the menu at the Libertine, there are so many choices and I always have a tough time picking what to eat! I couldn’t pick between the duck clubhouse or the soft shell crab…finally decided that I would be semi-healthy and avoided the deep fried crab.

Duck Clubhouse $15

The soup of the day was a roasted tomato and red pepper soup. It was really good, just the right amount of spice. The waitress had originally told us it was cream of cauliflower. I wasn’t too worried about it – I like tomatoes much better anyways. The sandwich was so filling. I had half of it, and half of the bf’s burger (below), and I was stuffed. The duck in the sandwich was cooked nicely and the combination of the ingredients (confit duck, bacon, stout cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and red pepper jelly) was very satisfying.

The Damn Good Burger $15

The bf’s burger was good, but not nearly as good as my sandwich. I think that was because the beef patty was a tad on the dry side. Other than that, I think it really would have been a damn good burger. The burger came topped with jalapeño cream cheese, fresh jalapeños, bacon, and crispy onions (and of course, lettuce and tomatoes). The jalapeño cream cheese and the fresh jalapeños added a really nice kick to the burger. The spiciness was what made me keep eating it despite the dry meat. Also, the crispy onions added a nice texture (but not enough for me to overlook the overly crumbly texture of the meat). I really wish more places in Calgary would ask how we want our burgers cooked!

[Dine-Out] Calgary: The Gypsy Bistro Wine Bar
March 13, 2012

Stopped by the Gypsy the other day for a quick lunch. I’ve always wanted to try their food, but their dinner is just a tad expensive for a casual night out.

We ordered a chicken and pear pizza. I love dishes that incorporate salty and sweet ingredients together. The bf actually ordered this but I think I ate the majority of it. He didn’t really like it but I did!

Yum

I got a chicken & apple sandwich that came with a side of salad. The salad was actually really good, I really liked the dressing that came on it. The sandwich was okay. Nothing great. Too much bread, the fillings was kind of bland. It was expensive too…

So-so

I…think…I like this place and will probably go back and try it again. The day that we went though, the table behind us was really loud and obnoxious so we couldn’t really enjoy our meal. Maybe we’ll try it for dinner one of these nights.

[Dine Out] Calgary: La Boulangerie
March 3, 2012

So I have had a ultra disappointing afternoon. I’m afraid this is going to be a bit of a rant…

I booked a reservation online through OpenTable to dine at Wurst for lunch. In the special request box, I specifically stated that I would be wanting the Big Taste menu. So I show up, sit down, receive their brunch menu, and then had to go ask about their Big Taste menu. They told me, that no, they’re only serving their brunch menu. You’d think that they could’ve called and let me know that they weren’t serving the Big Taste menu. And shame on the Big Taste website for not being more clear. When they put the restaurant’s lunch hours, it would seem to be a fair assumption that they’d be serving the Big Taste menu. It’s just so disappointing because that’s a wasted time slot since I could’ve went to another Big Taste restaurant. But, I digress.

That’s not really the main reason for my disappointment.

So when we were walking to Wurst, we noticed that this new bakery/cafe had opened beside it. And we were really excited to try it some other time because, from the outside, it looked lively and atmospheric.

So, when the Wurst plans fall through (didn’t feel like eating there, we already know what their brunch is like), we thought, hey, why not try this place out.

What. a. mistake.

I don’t know when exactly they opened, but they still have A LOT of kinks to work out.

First of all, the queue was ridiculous. We waited maybe 20 minutes just to get to the cashier to order. The girl in front of us was impatiently texting to her friend about how ridiculous the wait was. Also, there’s no flow in the place, the line was this chaotic mess that made the whole place seemed clustered and disorderly. So, when we finally got up to the cashier where we place our order, the people behind the counter decided to ignore the bf, and helped the people behing us! So we ended up getting our food really far apart, but I’ll talk about that later. They have this weird system where the cashiers would scrawl out the orders on the bottom of these paper boats (this is an obviously flawed system, to be observed later on). I had ordered a smoked salmon croissant, and when the cashier said a baguette when she was confirming my order, I had to correct her. This is noteworthy because it comes up later. Confusion #1.

I also ordered a green tea latte. So, when you read green tea latte, is it not fair to assume that it would be a macha latte? That’s what everyone else calls them. So I ordered, went back to the back of the line, because that’s where the coffee bar was, and patiently waited for my drink.

The barista was horrendous. HORRENDOUS. She was the most unpleasant girl to deal with. As I was waiting for my drink, every interaction I observed between her and a customer was awful. As the customers were leaving you can see the confusion in their eyes, like WTF, what is with this girl’s attitude? She was short and curt to customers. And yes, I understand, that it was busy, and she was probably flustered, but that’s no excuse to treat customers like sh*t. Friendly service is a big part of why people come back to an establishment. The food can be phenomenal, but if the service sucks, people won’t come back.

Anyways, I could tell that she was about to making my drink. And I noticed her grabbing a tea bag out, and, so being confused, I asked “oh – is the green tea latte not made with matcha powder?”. She glared at me, and answered a short “no”. That’s it. I’m sorry, but there is a reason why people go to Starbucks. There are people out there that are all going to be like: “blah, blah, blah, Starbucks is a soulless corporation” and “blah, blah, blah, you should support local”. Well, I would support local if they had their sh*t together. I go to Starbucks because I know what I’m paying for, the staff are trained, the service is standard, and I don’t have to deal with inconsistencies because the staff are trained properly. If I’m at a Starbucks and I was confused about the drink that I had ordered (and paid a ridiculous price for), and was obviously displeased that they were making my green tea latte with a friggin’ tea bag, they would’ve offered to make me another drink.

Seriously, what a rip-off. They are charging FOUR DOLLARS for a tea misto. I can get a tea misto anywhere else for under $3.00. And this was the smallest cup of “latte” ever. They call it a regular, but this is a size small. I mean, look at it.

IT'S CALLED A TEA MISTO, NOT A FRIGGIN' GREEN TEA LATTE

And you know what, it wouldn’t have been so bad if the barista wasn’t being a completely condescending little ———– about it. Confusion #2.

So, okay, whatever, I grabbed my drink because she obviously didn’t give two shi*ts about unsatisfied customers. Sat down. And waited. And waited. And waited. Seriously, the wait was much too long for a goddamn sandwich. How long does it take to cut open a croissant, smear some cream cheese on it, plop some salmon on it, and serve it on a paper boat? Apparently 20 minutes. For that long of a wait, the croissant better be fresh out of the oven (spoiler alert: it wasn’t). Confusion #3.

Finally, they call my name…but…it’s on a baguette. Remember up top, where I ordered a croissant, and there was a misunderstanding, and I clarified that I wanted a croissant? Remember? Yeah, apparently, they didn’t. They just made me a baguette anyways. So they took it back and made me a croissant. Confusion #4.

The 20 minute croissant

Okay, so now I have MY food. But wait where’s the bf’s order?

Oh yeah, because they skipped him, he had to wait until two other people got their orders first. Fine, we knew that was going to happen anyways. But then, other sandwiches started coming out…and they weren’t his. Finally, someone comes up to ask him with what they thought he had ordered (a completely different sandwich). Confusion #5.

No big deal, he tells the girl what type of sandwich he ordred. Before she went back behind the counter, she even asked him to clarify: “baguette or croissant?”. And he said baguette. Ok, right? No confusion there. She asked, he answered, everything should be dandy.

NOPE, a croissant comes out. Confusion number way too many. So he had to send it back for a baguette. I mean, come one, how many times can one group’s order be messed up? Obviously lots. One of the girls had to go around asking each table if they were waiting for food, and if it was a baguette or a croissant. They have some serious ordering issues that needs to be figured out.

So, there’s the whole service fiasco. But, how’s the food you ask? Mediocre, not worth it to deal with the chaotic ordering system and unpleasant barista. My croissant was good, but I mean, it was a croissant (mmm…buttery goodness), cream cheese (mmm…creamy goodness), and smoked salmon (mmm…fishy goodness). The croissant was good, it was fluffy and delicious, but I expected no less since it is a bakery. The salmon on the croissant was a really small portion. I mean really, teeny, tiny, portion. I don’t even think there was one whole portion of fish on there. Like, kind of skimming on the good stuff.

I spy with my little eyes...somethings that are NOT salmon...

Oh, and the cucumbers on my sandwich was bitter.

The baguette the bf got wasn’t good. He didn’t like it at all. He said there was not enough meat on it to even taste it through the baguette. He got the pepper salami baguette, it came with fresh Bocconcini cheese, roasted peppers, tomato, and organic basil.

Sammich - $8.00

All in all. Not worth it. I will wait, at least, three months, before going back there. That is, if they’re still in business. Service is key in the restaurant industry, almost as important as the quality of food. Whoever the owner is really needs to re-evaluate his business operations, and especially, his choice of baristas (hint: the one that worked on Saturday, March 3rd, around 12:00 pm). I think it could really become a good little cafe and bakery if they work out some of the service issues. And they need to realize, that the reason a neighbourhood cafe/bakery will thrive is the atmosphere. The cafe needs to have a friendly, rustic atmosphere. A calm, serene place that people would want to spend time in. Not a zoo of a place that treats you like crap and gauges you for overpriced items.

Until that happens, I’m not going to waste my time or money there anymore.
