[Dine-Out] Seattle: Uli’s Bierstube
August 30, 2012

Uli’s Bierstube. 2 words: German. Sausages.

Storefront

We actually walked by it several times before finally deciding to go inside to get a meaty snack.

We ordered the 2 link hausplatte to share. It came with 2 sausages of our choice and 3 sides of our choice. For the sides, we chose (from left to right) the white wine sauerkraut, the wine vinegar red cabbage, and the house made potato salad. I don’t quite remember what we ordered for ze sausage, but one was from the spicy category and one was from the medium category. both were delicious.

$10.95

The only fault I found with this place was that the service was kind of lacking. The owners (?) were quite intimidating and the process of ordering and paying was a little confusing.

[Quick Bite] Seattle: The Confectional
August 30, 2012

I LOVE CHEESECAKE. There. I confessed my love for cheesecake. Seriously, I love this stuff. I have an internal argument with myself every time during dessert ordering time. Do I order the cheesecake, which is more often than not, plain and normal and boring, or do I order something new to try? Cheesecake wins this internal debate 90% of the time. On a side note – why do restaurants not put more interesting cheesecakes on their menu? I’m super sick of seeing white chocolate cheesecake everywhere, so not cool.

The display case:

Glorious, glorious cheesecakes

We bought 2 of the individual sized cheesecakes to try:

Single boxes seem a tad bit wasteful…

The bf got the Mexican Chocolate flavour. He loves anything that’s spicy. It’s basically a dark chocolate cheesecake with cinnamon and cayenne pepper. I tried a bite, I thought it was a little weird, I don’t get the spicy chocolate thing that seems to be all the rage right now. It had a crazy odd aftertaste. I also am not a fan of anything too chocolate-ty, so the dark chocolate on a thick chocolate crust did nothing for me. He liked it though.

Not my cup of tea. Fo sho.

I got the Seattle’s NY Style cheesecake. I know, I know, right after I go on forever on how restaurants don’t have any awesome cheesecake flavours, and I go and buy the classic style cheesecake. I’m a sucker for plain cheesecake, just not at restaurants, where I’m paying $9.00 for a slice.

According to The Confectional’s website, the Seattle version of the classic NY cheesecake is more hearty and has a hint of freshly zested lemon and real vanilla.

The plain ‘ol classic.

I don’t know if it’s because I had a bite of the Mexican Chocolate first or what, but this totally didn’t live up to expectations. As far as cakes go, it was a pretty good cake BUT for a cheesecake…? Not that great. Definitely not as creamy as most cheesecakes that I’ve had.

[Quick Bite] Seattle: Maximus Minimus
February 12, 2012

I was on the hunt for food trucks when I was down in Seattle. After watching the Maximus Minimus episode on Eat Street, I knew I had to try something from the most awesome looking truck ever!

Hahahaha, I just noticed that their license plate says "SOME PIG" - so cute!

I was totally enamored by what the truck looks like because, honestly, I don’t even like pork that much.

The menu of goodies

I tried the hibiscus nectar for $2.00 (menu price +tax). I took one sip and instantly regretted my decision. It was really sweet and didn’t have enough of a spearmint flavor for me. I really wanted to try the ginger lemonade but  I wasn’t going to stand in the long line again for a drink. Laziness = 1, Me = o.

Hibiscus Nectar - nectar is the right word for it, very very sweet~

I got the Maximus Pulled Pork ($7.00) – a mixture of hot and spicy goodness~

Pork stewed in a mixture of peppers, onions, and fruit juices

This was such a delicious sandwich. And this is coming from a girl that doesn’t even like pork. I could eat 12 of these. Really. I love the spicy one but would’ve died to try the other one us well, but I couldn’t convince the bf to get one too. He wanted to eat something else…or had already eaten…I forgot. But what’s with this? Who says no to the totally awesome metal pig?

I also spaced, and forgot to order a side of minimus slaw, which is how the show recommended you eat it. Oh god, now I will never have the chance again. :(

So much meat~

I love that you can’t even see the bottom bum in the above picture. If you can see the bum, it means there is not enough meat!

[Dine-Out] Calgary: Fuji Yama Japanese Restaurant
August 26, 2011

Grabbed a quick dinner at Fuji Yama with a friend. I’ve actually never eaten in here before, the location of the restaurant never appealed to me. It’s in a stand alone building, next to a car rental place and a basement dim sum place. The interior of the restaurant is actually quite nicely decorated & spacious. Soooo….I guess I was wrong…

-____-”

We ordered the Ika Sugatayaki to start:

Grilled Squid for $8.95

The squid was quite good, it had a really nice smokey flavour.

And then we ordered a few rolls to share. I don’t recall what the name of these rolls were because they’re not posted on their website (what the what?!). I’m such an awful food blogger, I know.

This is a soft shell crab roll topped with mangoes and black tobiko:

Soft Shell Crab Roll

I was pleasantly surprised when this came out. As you can see from the pictures, the soft shell crab is actually quite meaty. Other places where I’ve had soft shell crab rolls always try to skimp and stick the skinny legs in. You can actually taste the crab in this roll, look at it! The meat is like half the roll. And they are generous with the tobiko too! Thumbs up!!

We also tried their Dragon Roll (I think), that’s the one on the left topped with avocado and tobiko. The roll itself is stuffed with unagi. Mmm…I love unagi, even though it’s not a sustainable fish. I shall try to eat less of it…

The ones on the right consists of two different rolls even though they look the same. One was rolled with salmon and cream cheese, and the other one had Japanese basil rolled into it. I actually didn’t like the one with the basil in it, it gave the roll an odd taste. Would not recommend.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, I was in Seattle all last week! But, the upside of that is I’ll have lots of Seattle posts to put up!!
