[Quick Bite] Calgary: Cheesy Bizness
February 11, 2013

Food truck continued. This time: Cheesy Bizness. Don’t really get the “cool” spelling of business, but whatevs.

The Hot Mess – $9.50

Waited in line so long for this. Like a ridiculously long time.

AND I only got half

The Hot Mess comes with Pimento cheese, Spragg’s Spanish chorizo, pepper jack, Sriracha mayo, and banana peppers. Sriracha is the way to my heart.

This sandwich was good. I just don’t know if it’s $10 good.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love that Calgary has food trucks now. But. The prices are too damn high. Considering the origin of food trucks and street food. I know, I know, it’s Calgary, everything is expensive here. I get it. And people seem to be willing to pay for it, so good for them. But I’m saying for me, personally, this will probably be the one and only $10 grill cheese I buy.

Although it was delicious, I can make my own grilled cheese. And probably faster too.

[Dine-Out] Seattle: Skillet Diner
September 27, 2012

We were actually looking for the Skillet food truck…but I guess my research skills are only subpar sinnnce we arrived at the brick-and-mortar diner. But it satisfied my need to have the oh-so famous bacon jam.

BACON JAM TIME

The diner was beautifully decorated. Airy and lots of natural light. Mason jars for water glass and kitchen towels for napkin. Lovely.

Interesting painting…

I got “the ultimate grilled cheese”:

With a side of the seasonal soup (can’t remember what it was though)

The grilled cheese  consisted of brie, cheddar, and american cheese sandwiched between two thick slabs of brioche. Grilled to perfection, look at the golden colour on that baby.

Look at it.

On a side note – if I could make all sandwiches on brioche I would. Love that stuff. And of course, I got the added bacon jam for two dollas.

The bf got the burger:

Of course, being Canadians, we had to sub the fries for some poutine (3 dollas)

Man, good thing I got the side of soup instead of fries. We could not even finish this behemoth portion of poutine. While the poutine was delicious in all its gravy, poutine-y goodness, we definitely felt like we had a brick in our stomachs after this. Sub the poutine with caution and make sure you have a good buddy to help you attack it.

Anyways, the burger. All of Skillet’s beef is locally raised at Painted Hills. The bf gave me a bite, it was delicious. I just tried the beef though, me and blue cheese  = no bueno. Bf loved it, the combination of bacon jam, arugula, cambozola, and beef was perfection.

[Dine-Out] Calgary: Vin Room
July 20, 2011

We were feeling a little peck-ish during the Lilac Festival and was looking everywhere with a patio to eat. Most places we wanted to eat were either jam-packed or simply not opened during the festivities. We finally decided on the VIN Room since they had a patio on the second floor that actually looked out on to fourth. We’ve actually eaten here once a long time ago, and didn’t recall any negative feeling towards the restaurant, so, what the heck!

Their menu is tapas inspired, focusing on a lot of small plates that are meant to be shared over a glass of wine. We were just hungry and wanted to be fed.

The bf loves sardines and ordered their grilled sardine for $5.00. It’s seasoned with maldon salt, olive oil, and lemon. This…was…okay…there’s nothing inspiring about it but it was cooked well and a decent enough snack.

Fishie~

He also ordered their grilled cheese. This was perhaps the most disappointing item we ordered. It’s just not what we expected, and there was nothing on the menu to indicate that you weren’t actually going to get a real sandwich. Pretty much we paid $10.00 for melted haloumi on toast. I would hardly think 3 pieces of bread and a handful or arugula would be worth much of anything. Also, not only was this a thoughtless dish, they didn’t even bother to cook it right – the toast was burnt. All three pieces. I mean come on, how hard is it to not burn toast?

Not impressed

I could've had 2 more sardines for the price of this crappy dish

Their stuffed bone marrow was good though, but I mean, it’s bone marrow…what’s not to like about fatty goodness? And at least they put a little more thought into this dish. The slaw it come with consisted of beets, apples, radishes, and parsley, all topped with a lemon vinaigrette. I love beets. This blew the crappy handful of arugula they called a salad out of the water.

Decently priced @ $5.00

I ordered the pan seared sablefish:

I <3 Sablefish

Sablefish is a mild flavoured white fish. The texture of this fish is great, I would recommend everyone to try it, it’s all flaky and delicious! The fish came on top of a bed of carrots and tiny (emphasis on the tiny) bacon chunks cooked in a chili gastrique.

This was hands down the best dish (taste & value) we ordered that day. You get a decent sized chunk of fish, the fish was actually prepared well (they can cook fish but can’t toast bread?), and it actually seemed like a fair trade for my $12.00.

Yummy!

I don’t think we’ll be going back to the VIN Room anytime soon. The menu is way overpriced for such mediocre food. But if I were to be invited to have a meal there, I would definitely order the sablefish again~

[Quick Bite] Calgary: Janice Beaton Fine Cheese
March 29, 2011

I read about the Janice Beaton Fine Cheese Grilled Cheese Bar and I just had to take the bf there. He loves his cheese!!

The sandwiches took quite a long time to make, we waited for almost 20 minutes? I think the FARM cooks has to make them, so we were competing with all the brunch diners for our food. I was entertained by being baffled at how much people spend on cheese. During the time we were waiting, there were probably 3 purchases of over $200.00, holy crap! I could never spend that much on cheese, but I’m not a cheese lover, so…I don’t know what I’m talking about!

The bf got the Whim of the Day sandwich, I wasn’t really paying attention, but it was filled with some stinky blue cheese. I was tricked into taking a bite (he told me it was goat cheese), and it was potent, waaaayyy to strong for a wussy cheese eater like me. He said it was delicious though, and gobbled up every last bit of cheese (even the little bits that fell onto the paper wrapper).

Whim of the Day!

I got the Ham and Cheese Please! Sandwich, it consists of Maple Pepper Ham,Gruyere,Greens,Mayonnaise, and a Sun Dried Tomato Tapenad. This is more up my alley, I like mild cheeses like Gruyere~

Ham and Cheese Please!

For $6.95, each sandwich comes with a little side of pickles and coleslaw. The pickles were yummy, and the coleslaw was just the way I like it – not creamy.

Baby Pickles!

The price is a little steep for the itty-bitty sandwich, the sandwich itself was probably only 4″ squared, and the freshly baked ciabatta buns (from Sidewalk Citizen Bakery) are pretty thick. The bf loved it though, and he’s usually a stickler for crappy meat to bread ratio, I guess it’s worth it for the quality cheese! I liked mine too, but I guess I’m just not that big of a cheese lover, it was nothing special for me. But, it was delicious and it comes wrapped in butcher paper (how cute!).
